Story
“Why am I doing this? Because I can. I have a good life where I have freedom and choice. This is a 9 day sacrifice to give back to those that aren’t as lucky as I am. It’s that simple”.
As the CEO of Brighton Homes and having worked in the home building industry for over 30 years, I have helped many families from all walks of life build new homes. If there’s one thing that is consistent across these builds, it’s the abundance of FREEDOM and CHOICE that comes with building and living in your own home. The freedom to build any house type you choose in an area you choose, the freedom and choice to decorate your home how you want and most importantly, the choice to come and go as you please, to eat what you want, when you want and the freedom of privacy, comfort and solitude in your own space.
This abundance of freedom and choice is one of the greatest gifts when building and living in your own home however, it too often is taken for granted. It’s now time to help provide homes to those who do not have these simple rights and that’s why I am taking part in the Simpson Desert Challenge. It’s time to give young people with high care needs the FREEDOM and CHOICE that they not only DESERVE but they NEED to survive.
I have signed up to walk over 250km through the Simpson Desert, over 9 grueling days that will see us walking over 1000 sand dunes whilst carrying our own supplies, with no access to showers, toilets, beds or any luxury. While this trek will challenge me mentally and physically, there is no comparison to what young people with high care needs go through every day.
MY GOAL: to raise over $100,000!***
***Due to overwhelming support we have had to increase our fundraising goal to $250,000. We want to thank everyone for their donations.***
NEW GOAL: $250,000
My five months of pre-trek training commences on 19th January 2021. Follow my journey via the below social channels for updates:

Suitable and appropriate supported housing is one of the greatest areas of unmet need for people with disabilities in Australia. Currently, there are thousands of young people being left behind in aged care, hospital rooms, rehabilitation centres – institutionalised accommodation – simply because there is nowhere else for them to go. Youngcare is a not-for-profit organisation creating choice and independence for young people with high care needs by providing fully accessible and age-appropriate living spaces, grants for equipment, home modifications and support through a national phone line. Youngcare is boldly tackling this national issue by acting as the conduit for industry, government and community to work together to bring much-needed change to the disability housing sector. Together we are creating a future where every young person has the freedom and choice to live the young lives we all deserve. Youngcare’s Grants programs bridge the gaps, by funding not only ‘reasonable and necessary’ disability items and services but those that provide further choice, independence and quality of life for young people with high care needs. www.youngcare.com.au
