Story
At the end of 2020 I jumped out of a plane. I was strapped to an extremely friendly Irishman at the time, with a perfectly functioning parachute, and in basically no danger. But by the time I hit the ground, I was absolutely overwhelmed with gratitude for the opportunities that I've had in life. How lucky have I been to enjoy all the freedoms I've enjoyed, and at times taken for granted?
I resolved to seek out and find a way to give back. There were two charities that immediately sprang to mind when I thought about the kind of causes that resonate with me. And Youngcare with the work that they do to offer young people a fuller, richer life experience, was front of my mind.
The very first time I googled Youngcare is when I learned about this trek, and thinking that I could offer some sort of support as a Digital Producer, I reached out to the team. A few days later I was in a coffee shop chatting with the CEO Anthony Ryan about joining the trek myself!
And now here I am, asking you to support me, to join me in supporting and championing the incredible work that Youngcare do, and to enable them to offer support and services to as many young Australians with high care needs - and their families - as is humanly possible.
Youngcare
Suitable and appropriate supported housing is one of the greatest areas of unmet need for people with disabilities in Australia. Currently, there are thousands of young people being left behind in aged care, hospital rooms, rehabilitation centres – institutionalised accommodation – simply because there is nowhere else for them to go. Youngcare is a not-for-profit organisation creating choice and independence for young people with high care needs by providing fully accessible and age-appropriate living spaces, grants for equipment, home modifications and support through a national phone line. Youngcare is boldly tackling this national issue by acting as the conduit for industry, government and community to work together to bring much-needed change to the disability housing sector. Together we are creating a future where every young person has the freedom and choice to live the young lives we all deserve. Youngcare’s Grants programs bridge the gaps, by funding not only ‘reasonable and necessary’ disability items and services but those that provide further choice, independence and quality of life for young people with high care needs. www.youngcare.com.au
